How Different Types of Meditation Affect the Brain: What New Research Means for Meditation Teachers

Meditation is often spoken about as though it were one single practice.

We hear that meditation calms the mind, changes the brain, reduces stress or supports emotional wellbeing. While these statements may contain some truth, they can also give the impression that every meditation technique is doing more or less the same thing.

Anyone who has explored meditation deeply knows that this is not quite how it feels.

Following the breath is different from repeating a mantra. Resting in open awareness is different from deliberately cultivating loving-kindness. A grounding practice may leave someone feeling steady and present, while a compassion practice may open the heart and bring previously unacknowledged emotions closer to the surface.

These practices have different intentions, methods and felt experiences.

A significant new neuroscience review is helping researchers understand that they also appear to engage the brain in overlapping, yet distinctly different ways.

For meditation teachers, this research offers an important reminder: meditation is not one uniform state, and the practice we choose matters.

A new whole-brain map of meditation

In 2026, researchers Caitlin Baten, Arielle Keller, Chris Miller and Matthew Sacchet published a systematic review and quantitative whole-brain meta-analysis of meditation research.

Rather than examining the results of one small brain-imaging experiment, the researchers brought together findings from 34 studies involving more than 700 people.

The review examined brain activity during four widely practised forms of meditation:

  • Focused attention meditation
  • Open monitoring meditation
  • Mantra recitation
  • Loving-kindness meditation

Using whole-brain meta-analytic methods, the researchers looked for patterns of activity that appeared reliably across multiple studies.

The authors describe this as one of the most comprehensive whole-brain investigations of meditation conducted so far. Their findings suggest that meditation involves some shared neural processes, but that different practices also produce distinguishable patterns of brain activity. words, there does not appear to be one single “meditation brain state.”

There is a family of meditative practices, each inviting the mind, body and awareness to engage in a slightly different way.

What happens in the brain across meditation practices?

Across the different meditation styles, the researchers found recurring activity in several areas of the brain, including the insula, hippocampus, supplementary motor area, superior temporal gyrus and rolandic operculum.

These regions have been associated with processes such as:

  • Awareness of bodily and internal experience
  • Attention and self-monitoring
  • Memory and contextual learning
  • Sensory integration
  • Motivation and intentional action
  • Emotional reappraisal
  • Awareness of present experience

This does not mean that any one area of the brain has a single, simple purpose. The brain works through interconnected networks, and the same region may participate in many different processes.

Still, the recurring patterns offer a possible glimpse into what meditation practices share.

Across different techniques, meditation often asks us to notice experience, recognise when attention has wandered, relate differently to thoughts and feelings, and intentionally return to the practice.

While some neural activity was shared, each of the four meditation styles was also associated with its own pattern.

This is one of the study’s most important findings.

Focused attention meditation involves deliberately placing attention on a chosen anchor, such as the breath, a sound, a sensation or an object.

When attention wanders, the practitioner notices this and gently returns to the anchor.

The review found that focused attention meditation engaged regions including the insula, supplementary motor area, superior frontal gyrus and hippocampus.

These areas are associated with processes such as attentional control, monitoring, body awareness and the intentional redirection of attention.

This makes intuitive sense.

Focused attention is not simply about remaining perfectly concentrated. It involves an ongoing cycle of noticing, remembering the intention to practise and returning.

Each return is part of the meditation.

Open monitoring meditation

Open monitoring practices invite awareness of the changing field of experience without maintaining an exclusive focus on one object.

Thoughts, sensations, emotions and sounds may all be noticed as they arise and pass.

The review associated open monitoring with regions involved in present-moment awareness, attentional monitoring and recognising what is significant within experience. These included areas of the insula, inferior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus and superior frontal gyrus.

Rather than repeatedly returning to one narrow anchor, the practitioner learns to remain aware of a broader flow of experience.

This may support the capacity to witness thoughts and feelings without becoming as immediately entangled in them.

Mantra meditation

Mantra meditation commonly involves the repetition of a word, phrase or sacred sound, either aloud or internally.

In this review, mantra recitation was associated with distinct activity in areas including the putamen and insula.

These regions have been linked with sustained attention, internal bodily awareness, rhythm and psychomotor integration.

Mantra practice can provide the mind with a steady rhythm and an intentional point of return. For some people, this structure may feel more accessible than observing thoughts or attending closely to the breath.

The sound, repetition and vibration may also bring meditation into a more embodied and rhythmic experience.

Loving-kindness meditation

Loving-kindness meditation involves intentionally cultivating qualities such as care, friendliness, compassion and goodwill towards oneself and others.

The review found patterns of activity across prefrontal, cingulate and emotion-related brain systems associated with compassion and social-emotional processing.

Unlike practices that primarily stabilise attention, loving-kindness deliberately introduces an emotional and relational quality.

The intention is not only to observe experience, but to shape the way we meet ourselves and others.

This distinction matters. Attention is being trained, but so too are warmth, connection and compassionate responsiveness. this mean we can prescribe meditation by brain region?

Not yet.

Brain imaging can show patterns of blood flow and activity associated with a practice, but it cannot tell us the whole story of someone’s inner experience.

The studies included different meditation traditions, levels of practitioner experience, comparison conditions and research methods. Bringing these studies together helps reveal more reliable patterns, but it does not remove all of these differences.

The review also examined brain activity while people were meditating. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular practice will produce a specific psychological or clinical outcome.

It would therefore be too simplistic to say:

“Focused attention activates this area, so it will fix this problem.”

Human beings are more complex than that.

Our response to meditation is shaped by many factors, including our history, nervous system, culture, beliefs, current circumstances, experience with meditation and the quality of the guidance we receive.

The research gives us a map, but it is not the whole landscape.

There remains something deeply personal, relational and mysterious about what unfolds when a person becomes quiet enough to meet their own experience.

For meditation teachers, perhaps the greatest value of this research is not learning the names of individual brain regions.

It is understanding that different practices are doing different things.

The intention of the practice matters

Before choosing a technique, it can be helpful to ask:

  • What capacity are we hoping to support?
  • Are we helping participants develop stability of attention?
  • Are we inviting a broader awareness of thoughts and sensations?
  • Are we cultivating compassion?
  • Are we offering rhythm, sound or repetition as a steadying anchor?
  • Are we supporting someone to feel more grounded in their present environment?

Clear intentions help teachers choose practices more thoughtfully, rather than offering the same meditation for every person or situation.

Meditation is not one-size-fits-all

A practice that feels settling for one person may feel uncomfortable or activating for another.

Breath awareness may be deeply supportive for some people, while another person may find sound, touch, movement or visual orientation easier to connect with.

A compassion practice may feel nourishing, but it may also bring grief or unmet needs closer to awareness. Open monitoring may create spaciousness for an experienced practitioner, while someone else may need a clearer and more stabilising anchor.

As ACMM’s trauma-sensitive teaching materials emphasise, no single practice will be right for everyone at every moment. Choice, pacing, grounding and attention to each person’s direct experience remain essential.

Teachers need a range of practices

The research supports the value of learning more than one meditation technique.

A well-trained teacher can draw from focused attention, sensory grounding, body awareness, mantra, visualisation, compassion, movement, open awareness and other approaches.

This does not mean offering more techniques simply for the sake of variety.

It means understanding what each practice is inviting, recognising how participants are responding and adapting the meditation when needed.

A teacher’s role is not to force someone towards a predetermined experience. It is to create the conditions in which awareness, agency and a supportive relationship with experience can develop.

The language used to guide a practice matters

Even when two teachers offer the same basic technique, the experience may be very different.

A rigid instruction to control the breath is not the same as an invitation to become curious about how breathing feels today.

Telling someone to clear their mind is different from helping them notice that wandering is a natural part of attention.

Directing someone to feel compassion is different from gently exploring whether warmth, understanding or simple acknowledgement might be available.

Technique matters, but so do tone, relationship, language, pacing and permission.

This is one reason meditation teacher training involves much more than learning a collection of scripts.

Meditation as both science and lived experience

Neuroscience offers valuable ways of understanding meditation.

It can help us recognise patterns, test assumptions and move beyond vague claims about meditation “changing the brain.”

This new research also brings greater precision to the field. Instead of asking only what meditation does, researchers can begin asking more useful questions:

  • Which kind of meditation?
  • Practised by whom?
  • For how long?
  • With what intention?
  • Under what conditions?
  • And with what effects?

At the same time, a brain scan cannot fully communicate the feeling of returning to the breath after being lost in thought.

It cannot capture the tenderness that may arise during loving-kindness practice, the inner resonance of a mantra, or a moment in which the usual boundary between self and life seems to soften.

Science can help us see part of what is happening.

Our own embodied experience helps us understand what it means.

We do not need to choose between the two.

Meditation can be approached with scientific curiosity while still honouring its contemplative depth, ancient roots and capacity to bring us into relationship with aspects of life that cannot always be neatly measured.

What qualities do they cultivate?

What are you inviting participants to notice, strengthen or relate to differently?

Do you tend to rely on one familiar technique?

How might your teaching change if you viewed meditation not as a single intervention, but as a diverse family of practices?

There is no need to find one perfect meditation.

The deeper invitation is to develop the knowledge, personal experience and sensitivity to recognise which practice may be supportive here, for this person, in this moment.

It also supports teachers to develop their own embodied practice, rather than relying only on scripts or theoretical knowledge.
